Project A: Research Best Book/Magazine Cover [Ruqaya]

1stbook: A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini

1.      What is the story?

Once you see the cover you can probably think that this novel is centered around a typical Afghan lady and the events of her life. Having the image of that certain village or town brings the thought that this novel contains some real historical events that took place in that town.
2. What are the strengths?

The harmony of the image’s colors is wonderful and actually makes you feel “a thousand splendid suns”. Good choice of the typeface and its alignment.
3. What are the weaknesses? What can be improved?

Maybe the color of author’s name could be changed.

2nd book: eat pray love, by Elizabeth Gilbert

1.      What is the story?

The cover tells the story of the book which is “one woman’s search for everything across Italy, India, and Indonesia”. Eat, pray, and love in fact summarize the results of the journey. The way that the title is shown highlights the inspirational look and feel of the book.
2. What are the strengths?

Clean, simple, and clear book cover. Each of the three words of the book title is written with different element that is related to the word, and this from my point of view reflects the meanings and the feelings of the words strongly.
3. What are the weaknesses? What can be improved?

I think that it would be better if the quote of Anne Lamott was moved under the author’s name and make it center aligned.

3rd book: Excuse Me: A Little Book of Manners, by Karen Katz

1.      What is the story?

This is a little book of manners that teaches children how to behave in such situations. The cover’s illustration emphasizes the story of the book as it shows a kid trying to think what to do or how to behave.
2. What are the strengths?

Colorful design with big nice illustration which make the cover attractive and give it a friendly look and feel. Also the font goes with the design.
3. What are the weaknesses? What can be improved?

  1. quite interesting books, specially the first.. i was so drawn into the image which gives a good intention of the content.

and i agree with your view point regarding the 2nd book. Such quotes are usually written on the back cover or even inside the book. Never seen on a book cover before. Good observation
